It’s the early evening when she comes back home from one of Pete’s parties at the Vitex offices and all she wants is to fall on her bed and sleep until the next morning. She hates those parties, hates those people and, above all, hates that she has to smile and act like a perfect daughter when she could be working on the canon. But she does as she’s asked anyway, to please Pete and to please her mum.
She directly goes to the bathroom, to get rid of this awful pink dress and to remove her makeup. Out of exhaustion, she forgets she’s no longer alone in the tiny flat. Hence her surprise when she opens the door to face… Well, it’s not just the fact that he’s here. It’s mostly what he’s doing that surprises her.
He’s in the bathtub, wearing his leathers boots, a plain white tee-shirt and underpants, not shaved – he refuses too, even if she’s bought him a razor. He has round glasses on his nose, and she knows those belong to Jake. He’s here, with such strange clothes, playing with a bit of water as if it was the most natural thing to do. And maybe it is.
He looks so young, so innocent, just playing like a child, that she almost forgets the darkness in him. She just looks at him and, when he finally notices her, he just starts laughing. A beautiful laugh, a beautiful noise, even if she can’t help but remember another laugh, a manly giggle that sounds like Tigger. And then she realises: it’s the first time she sees him laughing. It’s the first time she sees something that can be a glimpse of happiness.
Maybe it makes her happy too.
